How would you handle this difficult interview question?

I think you should do what you have been doing; politely telling them you would rather not discuss it because it's difficult for you, as you two were very close. If people are professional, they will respect that. If they don't, you shouldn't want to work for them anyway. Also, I'm very sorry for your loss. Good luck with everything!
