Eve and the forbidden fruit?

I recently started reading the bible for the first time. I grew up as Catholic and did the whole Sunday school thing, but I never felt compelled to read the Bible until i met someone whose faith was just unconditional and beautiful. Anyways to the point... I am a little confused on why Eve's betrayal of God is deemed as the worst sin ever. This could be just me but Eve's mistake in my opinion wasn't a mistake at all; it gave us all the ability to actually feel life. If we are always happy without a care in the world how could we ever really appreciate what God did for us. Suffering seems to me to be essential for happiness. My father ped away when I was back in high school and in hindsight I don't think he could of given me a better gift. I appreciate everything he ever did or tried to do for me. That wasn't always the case though. Also, now I just have such a pion for life that before wasn't there. I am sure Adam and Eve felt the same way about losing God. So anywho what do you guys think?
