Question on using transfer paper for photo for a memory quilt...?

I am thinking about making a memory quilt with transfer paper, to have a few pictures on the quilt. If I do this, the squares that are photo's, will they be easily to peel off, or is it like they are soaked into the fabric, so they will be easy to wash and be used. I have never used transfer paper and am curious... true helpful answers appreciated!
