Metals for body jewelry?

I understand that body jewelry must be made of surgical steel while it's sitting through flesh in order to avoid infection. Now I have two pcs. of navel jewelry, the kind with ornaments dangling from the barbell. But whatever connected them fell off, so it's in two pieces. I re-attached them together with copper wire, but will that have any adverse reaction to my skin?
